What does extracting images from a PDF do?
A PDF often contains photos, logos, charts, and graphics embedded inside it. Extracting images pulls those pictures out as separate image files, giving you the originals rather than a screenshot of the page around them. This is different from converting pages to images: page conversion photographs the whole page, while extraction recovers the individual pictures that were placed into the document. Because this tool runs entirely in your browser, the images are pulled out on your own device and the file is never uploaded.
When should you extract images from a PDF?
Extract when you want the pictures themselves, not the pages. Designers recover a logo or photo from a brochure PDF to reuse it. Someone who received a document wants the product images out of a catalogue. Researchers pull figures and charts from a paper. Anyone rebuilding a presentation or web page from a PDF grabs its images to place them fresh. If instead you want a picture of a whole page — layout, text, and all — converting the page to an image is the tool you need.
How to get the best results
Extraction gives you the images at the quality they were embedded, so a document built from high-resolution photos yields high-resolution files, while one with small, compressed images yields small ones — the tool cannot add detail that was never stored. If a document has many images, downloading them together as a ZIP keeps them organised. If you actually wanted the look of a page rather than its component pictures, use the page-to-image conversion instead; extraction is specifically for the embedded originals.
Limitations to be aware of
Extraction recovers images that are stored as images inside the PDF. Content that is drawn as vector shapes or laid out as text is not a photo and will not come out as an image file. The images you get are exactly as embedded — if they were downscaled or compressed when the PDF was made, that is the quality you receive. And a single visual on a page may sometimes be built from several separate image pieces. For genuine embedded photos and graphics, though, extraction returns them cleanly.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
The most common mistake is expecting extraction to capture a whole page’s appearance; for that, convert the page to an image instead. Another is expecting higher quality than was embedded — extraction returns the stored image, it cannot upscale it. People also sometimes look for a vector logo and get nothing, because it was drawn as shapes, not stored as an image. Knowing the difference between “the images in the PDF” and “a picture of the page” points you to the right tool.
Using it on mobile and desktop
On a computer, extract all the graphics from a brochure or report to reuse in a new design or page. On a phone, quickly pull a photo out of a PDF to share or save; everything runs locally, so nothing is uploaded. Because there is no app to install, the same link works on every device, and the extracted images save straight to your files.
Why extract here instead of another site?
Most online image-extraction tools upload your whole PDF to a server to pull the pictures out, exposing a document that may be private. This tool never uploads your file — the images are extracted inside your browser, so the document stays on your device from start to finish. There are no watermarks on the images, no account to create, and no limit on how many files you process. For recovering images from private documents, keeping it local is the sensible approach.
